Harry Nilsson - Son Of Schmilsson (1972)

One of my favorite records by Harry Nilsson. Though this was considered to be a follow up to Nilsson Schmilsson,  with this album he decided that since he already had a hit album and was hanging with The Beatles, he might as well indulge in his song writing talent and put together an album that's completely unhinged. Though all the songs somewhat enter a melodic pop/rock territory, the records kind of all over the place. Within the first three tracks there's a rocker tribute to a groupie, a piano ballad, and a country song, with horror movie sound effects mixed in between, and the unpredictability of the album holds up all the way through, but it's done so in an absolutely amazing way.

Tracklist:
1. Take 54
2. Remember (Christmas)
3. Joy
4. Turn On Your Radio
5. You're Breakin' My Heart
6. Spaceman
7. The Lottery Song

11. The Most Beautiful World In The World

Mogwai - Happy Songs For Happy People (2003)

This is the album that got me into Mogwai, and I still think it's the best stuff they've done so far. "Kids Will Be Skeletons" is one of my all time favorite jams. One of my first jobs ever was as a clerk in a garden center outside a grocery store. The owner of the store made us always have a Beach Boys greatest hits album playing on constant rotation, and I hated it. If you told me then that The Beach Boys would eventually be my favorite band ever I would have laughed. Anyways, one day I decided to be a defiant asshole and put this album on and I never saw the garden center clear out so fast in the entire summer I worked there. The next day I got in trouble with the owner who said there were multiple complaints about some "weird unbearable noise" in the garden center. For the remainder of the summer he would check up on me at least 3 times a shift to make sure I still had The Beach Boys cd playing.

Tracklist:
1. Hunted By A Freak

The Small Faces - The Autumn Stone (1969)

After Steve Marriott left the band high and dry during the recording of their third album for Immediate Records in 1968, Immediate Records instead decided to release this album, which is an anthology of sorts which includes hit singles from all the way back in their Decca years, to their final 45, as well as a few live tracks, a bunch of non-hit album tracks, and a few unissued tracks from the tail end of The Small Faces career which were probably intended for the never-finished third Immediate LP.

Kid Dakota - So Pretty (2002)

I rocked this album hard last spring. One of the saddest albums I've ever heard. Kind of heavy, while remaining soft in a weird way. I read on another blog that it's like reading someone's diary, and I think that's an accurate way to describe it.

Various Artists - Harry Smith's Anthology Of American Folk Music Vol. 3: Songs (1952)

In 1952, Folkway Records released The Anthology Of American Folk Music. The Anthology Of American Folk Music was released in 3 volumes, all of which were compiled by Harry Smith from his personal collection of 78 records. The Anthology is famous for it's role as a touchstone during the folk revival of the 1950's and 1960's. Also known as The Harry Smith Anthology, this was the bible of folk music during the revival on the Greenwich Village folk scene, and brought the works of artists such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Mississippi John Hurt to the attention of revival artists such as Bob Dylan and Joan Baez.

The Anthology was divided by Harry Smith into three two-album volumes: ballads, social music, and songs. This is the third volume, which consists of regular songs, dealing with with every day life: critic Greil Marcus describes it's thematic interests as being marriage, labor, dissipation, prison, and death.

XTC - Oranges & Lemons (1989)

XTC are a band that took a while to grow on me, but I'm really glad they did. On this album they've created a almost perfect blend between psychedelia, and power pop. Though instead of reveling entirely on psychedelia as they had been with their side project, The Dukes of Stratosphere, they've created a much more mature pop album here. At it's best, it's almost reminiscent of a modernized Sgt. Peppers or Pet Sounds, with my only complaint being that while almost all the tracks are great, they don't seem to flow seamlessly together. Another record from the King of Trade

Tracklist:
1. Garden Of Earthly Delights

RIP Pinetop Perkins

For anyone who didn't already know, legendary bluesman Pinetop Perkins died in Austin, Texas last night at the age of 97.

Charles Mingus - Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus (1963)

I really love this Charles Mingus album, considered to be somewhat of a "greatest hits revisited" (or reimagined). Released in 1963, the same year as his critically acclaimed masterwork "The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady". Though almost every song on this album is a reworking of a previous recording, the 11 piece band assembled here blasts through them, often surpassing the original efforts - which is no small feat.

Tracklist:
1. II B.S.
2. I X Love
3. Celia
4. Mood Indigo

Spiritualized - Lazer Guided Melodies (1992)

Spiritualized's debut album, sounds more like Spacemen 3 than the gospel influenced psychedelia of Spiritualized's later albums. Amazing dream pop. Unlike Spiritualized's other albums, which I had immediately taken a liking to the first time I'd heard most of them, this album took a while to grow on me. In fact, it wasn't until a couple weeks ago that I finally "got it". I was having a shitty day at work, and I came home and retired to my room, for some reason I picked this album, threw it on, cranked up my stereo, shut off my lights and zoned out, and it felt fucking great.

Tracklist:
1. You Know It's True
2. If I Were With Her Now
3. I Want You
4. Run
5. Smiles
6. Step Into The Breeze

Leonard Cohen - New Skin For The Old Ceremony (1974)

One of Leonard Cohen's best albums, and probably his most musical, as he's accompanied by viola's, banjo's, mandolin's, and percussion. He also actually sings a lot more on this one than any of his others.

2. Chelsea Hotel #2
3. Lover Lover Lover
4. Field Commander Cohen
5. Why Don't You Try

Glen Campbell - Galveston (1969)

This album was released in 1969, and unlike Glen Campbell's previous album he now no longer felt the need to cover AM radio contemporary hits such as "Dock of the Bay", and selected more country songs with a pop embellishment. This album features 2 songs written by Jimmy Webb, which became the 2 hits from this album, the title track "Galveston", which I prefer the Jimmy Webb solo version of, and "Where's The Playground Susie".

Tracklist:
1. Galveston
2. Take My Hand For A While
3. If This Is Love
4. Got To Have Tenderness
5. Friends

The Knack - Get The Knack (1979)

The Knack's 1979 debut albums, and one of the most successful debut albums by any band of all time (it went gold in 13 days). Super fun and kind of sleazy power-pop, though I'm not a huge fan of the big hit on this album, "My Sharona". Comparable to a modernization of The Beatles earlier albums.

Tracklist:
1. Let Me Out
2. Your Number Or Your Name
3. Oh Tara
4. (She's So) Selfish
5. Maybe Tonight
6. Good Girls Don't

Gabor Szabo - Dreams (1969)

Gabor Szabo was introduced to me by the great Friar Chris, it was a mellow trip transfer. He once told me that he could see himself listening to Gabor Szabo in Toronto, and then he moved to Toronto. Real mellow stuff. Certified for trippers.

Live bootleg from Steel Mill, Bruce Springsteen's band before he went "solo". A lot more just straight up rock n roll. Slim Whitman - Country Songs/City Hits (1982)

1964 country album. I'm listening to this for the first time as I rip it, and actually it's the first time I've ever heard anything by Slim Whitman, but I found this record for a dollar at a thrift shop and it looked interesting so I picked it up. I think it's kind of obvious that I really enjoy old country music, and this is an enjoyable listen. I could be entirely wrong here, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was an attempt to cash in on the hype of Ray Charles "Modern Sounds In Country And Western" LP's. Though the style of this LP is completely different to the style of the Ray Charle's LP's, there's a write up on the back of this LP about how the point of this was to prove that country music can also sell well in the pop market. Also, Slim Whitman plays 2 songs on this that are also present on Modern Sounds In Country And Western Vol. 1.

Tracklist:
1. It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'
2. You're The Reason

Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque (1991)

I fucking love this album. Amazing power-pop in the vain of Big Star from start to finish. I recently asked a friend of mine how he could be a fan of this album, and not a fan of Big Star because I think this sounds extremely similar to Big Star, and he said "because it's better than Big Star". I'm not sure if I agree with that entirely, but I really fucking love this album. Lately I've been throwing it on first thing in the morning while I get ready for work, great way to start the day. Magic Slim & The Teardrops - Raw Magic (1983)

Magic Slim & The Teardrops are one of my favorite modern blues outfits, and probably the best Chicago blues band around today. There's something about the raw grittiness of their sound and Magic Slim's guitar tone that I absolutely love. This is their sixth album, released in 1983, and for some reason it was originally only released in France.

Tracklist:
1. You Can't Lose What You Never Had

The Rapture - House Of Jealous Lovers (2003)

Remember when this was the coolest fucking band ever? I saw them live with Interpol, Mogwai, and The Cure, and they put on a fucking rad show. They had a dude wearing tons of tie dye that did nothing but played a cow bell and danced around on stage. This is the single from the LP that made them really cool, and then a year later they kind of just disappeared and I haven't heard a thing about them since. Apparently they're still around and plan on releasing their 4th album this year.

3. Hallucination

Uncle Tupelo - Anodyne (1993)

Uncle Tupelo was Jeff Tweedy's band before Wilco, and Jay Farrar's band before Son Volt, and this is their final album. This was also one of my favorite albums a few years ago. I saw Jeff Tweedy play a solo performance at folk fest in 2005 and he played a bunch of songs off this album and it was pretty rad. Really great country rock. Ripped from the Rhino Vinyl 180 gram vinyl reissue.

Tracklist:
1. Slate
2. Acuff-Rose
3. The Long Cut
4. Give Back The Key To My Heart
5. Chickamauga
6. New Madrid
7. Anodyne
8. We've Been Had
9. Fifteen Keys
10. High Water
11. No Sense In Lovin'
12. Steal The Crumbs

Gary U.S. Bonds - On The Line (1982)

The second Gary U.S. Bonds album produced by Bruce Springsteen and Steve Van Zandt and featuring The E Street Band as the back up band. 7 of the 11 tracks on this album are written by Bruce Springsteen, and it's often considered to be his follow up to The River, just with a different singer. It has a similar feel to The River both in sound and lyrical content, and includes a cover of Rendezvous, and a few other songs are recognizable from the recent The Promise: The Making of Born To Run movie.

Tracklist:
1. Hold On (To What You Got)
2. Out Of Work

5. Love's On The Line
