MTT Fest - March 24th 2012

Heard about this real mellow festival happening in my city and thought I'd advertise it on here. Never thought I'd see the days when some of my favorite artists actually play in Calgary. I hear the guest headliner is supposed to be real exciting!

Music Times Two presents MTT Fest 2012:

VERY SPECIAL GUEST HEADLINER TBA!!!

SONIC BOOM (Rugby, England)
Sonic Boom, founder of Spacemen 3 with Jason Pierce, went on to form Spectrum in 1990 and has since released a number of albums in that name and continues to perform live as Spectrum.
Sonic also created the Experimental Audio Research (E.A.R) project creating music with luminaries such as Eddie Prevost and Kevin Shields.
He has many collaborations to his name and has been involved with The Silver Apples, Delia Derbyshire, Dean & Britta as well as mixing duties for The Psychic Ills, Amon Tobin, Moon Duo and Cheval Sombre.
in 2009 he produced MGMT’s Congratulation’s album and this year completed work on Panda Bear’s Tomboy.
He just finished a successful tour with Panda Bear.

Damo Suzuki (Japan)
Damo Suzuki was with Can from 1970 to 1973, recording a number of well-regarded albums such as Tago Mago, Future Days and Ege Bamyasi.
He returned to music in 1983, and currently leads what is known as Damo Suzuki's Network - as he tours, he performs live improvisational music with various local musicians (so-called "Sound Carriers" [4]) from around the world, thus building up a 'network' of musicians with whom he collaborates. As far as more recent recorded material is concerned, Damo is featured on electronic/hip-hop producer Sixtoo's album, "Chewing on Glass and Other Miracle Cures".

Cheval Sombre (NYC)

One man-band Cheval Sombre emerged in the early 2000s, writing and recording songs in a studio apartment on the Hudson River, NY.
After sending demos to Sonic Boom a recording session took place in 2006, supported by guest musicians Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips which resulted in his debut self-titled album released on Double Feature records.
He has also released three 7” singles It’s A Shame/ Little Bit of Heaven, I Found It Not So/ Where Did Our Love Go and I Sleep.
Cheval is in the final stages of work on his next album.

The Famines (Edmonton, AB & Montreal, Qc)
The Famines are a focused and purposeful two-piece noise-garage combo once described as "berzerker barrage" and based out of Edmonton and Montreal, Canada. Garrett Kruger plays drums and percussion, Raymond Biesinger sings, guitars, and executes the aesthetic end of things. They've spread their DIY minimalist-maximalist beams across Canada coast to coast four times since 2008, put out five 7" records, four editions of a visual art book, countless B&W posters, an 8-track, an educational pamphlet, and a seven-song live cassette coupled with a 268-page liner note book. They have rare heat, volume and tension, matched with a visual-audio synthesis to be jaw-dropped at. It's all true.

Faux Fur (Calgary, AB)
Calgary has produced a lot of great music in the last decade - the likes of Feist, Braids, & Women come to mind. Well, soon you'll be adding Faux Fur to that list. Poised to blow up BIG in 2012, with sounds that will surely appeal to fans of bands like Sonic Youth & Real Estate. Faux Fur is currently recording their debut full length with the maestro Chad VanGaalen, so I'd definitely recommend marking them as Calgary's new band-to-watch. The buzz at their shows is reminiscent of early Braids shows in Calgary, so come watch them at MTT Fest before they are back in a couple years selling out huge venues & getting even more blog buzz.

Extra Happy Ghost!!! (Calgary, AB)

extra happy ghost!!! used to say, "happiness is not found at the end of a rainbow, it lays in a sensory deprivation chamber with 'red headed stranger' playing on repeat". it turns out, that requires sound - now they say nothing.

Ketamines (Lethbridge, AB)
Mammoth Cave owner Paul Lawton teams up with Lethbridge's finest to write songs that could only be created by a group of musicians that probably got into Pet Sounds and 60's psych rock at too young an age. Formed from the ashes of bands such as The Square Waves, Myelin Sheaths, and James Leroy. To get a good idea of their sound, imagine the end result of Robert Pollard collaborating with Curt Boettcher while listening to Nuggets on repeat.

Deadhorse (Calgary, AB)
Easily Calgary's trippiest band, Deadhorse brings the rock. And the roll. And some psych. They also usually bring some instruments when they play.

Dirty Sill (Edmonton, AB)

Dirty Still are a new band, a fresh band (first show!) , the type of band whose sonic vibrations could only be created by veterans of all things mind bending. Featuring members of Service:fair, and Brazilian Money, these guys are guaranteed to make the stage shine with a lysergic glow.

Wild Abandon (Calgary, AB)
Wild Abandon's the rock and roll brainchild of ex-Dude, current A-team, Dan Mackinnon. Originally conceived in the kitchen of the legendary Rock Central following the death of Hellride To A Bloodbath rockers The Staasi Quartet. Wild Abandon has been a rare outing for the past decade. If you're a fan of Guided By Voices, Pavement, or just rock n roll in general, these guys are a band you won't want to miss.

Ram Hoss (Saturn)
Hailing from the home planet of Sun Ra, Ram Hoss is the solo project of Jordon from the acclaimed Azeda Booth. Jord is a veritable song-writing machine & is surely going to be ready with a fresh batch of homespun delights to serenade you with come March 24th.

Rob Roy And The Sultans (St John's, NL)
Some people call him Two Pair Pat, some people call him Rob Rob & The Sultans, some people call him a real mellow tripper on a trippy trip. Mr. Roy sounds something like what would happen if Neil Young accidentally ingested a Avey Tare record and puked it up. Come vibe out to the salty Sultan!

Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at http://mttfest.eventbrite.com/
They will also be available soon at Sloth Records (Calgary, AB), and Black Byrd (Edmonton, AB)
