Spiritualized - Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space Live at Radio City July 30th 2010

I posted a recording of this before, but I just came across a video, and it fucking rules. Holy fuck.

And another post from the same youtube channel, another entire live set from Glatsonbury in 2004:

Spiritualized - Ladies And Gentleman We Are Floating In Space (1997)

At the request of the mystical wizard A-ron, here's Spiritualized's 1997 magnum-opus. One of the first things I put up on this blog was a live version of this album, which I think at times is even better than the studio version, you can get that here. This is ripped from the 2010 vinyl reissue. Download with caution: this is a real heavy hitter.

Spiritualized Electric Mainline - Pure Phase (1995)

Spiritualized's second album, credited to "Spiritualized Electric Mainline" instead of just "Spiritualized". Jason Pierce has stated that the band was actually called "Spiritualized Lazer Guided Melodies", after the first album, and he wanted to change it to "Spiritualized Rocket Shaped Songs" for the second album, but soon rejected the idea and settled on "Spiritualized Electric Mainline" before finally settling on "Spiritualized".

Although Ladies And Gentleman We Are Floating In Space is often considered to be Spiritualized's magnum opus, I think this album is better. The album flows together perfectly and has amazing balance in the sequencing. At times it will make you want to melt into the floor, and right when you're on the verge of completely zoning out and embracing nothing but the pulsing drone of a song like "Electric Mainline" until you're caught in a almost meditative stupour, you're thrown right into a space-pop gem like "Lay Back In The Sun" that you'd rather be listening to outside in the summer while enjoying a cold beverage than in your basement in the dark with headphones on. The album's made up of three type of songs: droning ambient instrumental tracks, pop/rockers, and ballads. And they're sequenced in such a way that they flow together seamlessly. This album is meant to be listened to from start to finish. It's an experience.

Ripped from the 2010 reissue on Plain Records.

Spiritualized - Lazer Guided Melodies (1992)

Spiritualized's debut album, sounds more like Spacemen 3 than the gospel influenced psychedelia of Spiritualized's later albums. Amazing dream pop. Unlike Spiritualized's other albums, which I had immediately taken a liking to the first time I'd heard most of them, this album took a while to grow on me. In fact, it wasn't until a couple weeks ago that I finally "got it". I was having a shitty day at work, and I came home and retired to my room, for some reason I picked this album, threw it on, cranked up my stereo, shut off my lights and zoned out, and it felt fucking great.

Tracklist:
1. You Know It's True
2. If I Were With Her Now
3. I Want You
4. Run
5. Smiles
6. Step Into The Breeze
7. Symphony Space
8. Take Your Time

11. Sway
12. 200 Bars

Spacemen 3 - The Perfect Prescription (1987)

Jason Pierce's band before Spiritualized. Total stoner rock/neo-psych. Cool shit. Definitely receives the Certified Trippers Seal of Approval. Ripped from the 2010 Fire records reissue on 180 gram vinyl.

2. Walkin' With Jesus
3. Ode To Street Hassle

Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space Live at Radio City Music Hall July 30th 2010

Update: I did a bit of research, and it turns out the "I can't help falling in love with you" part was in the original version of "Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating in Space" but due to legal reasons they had to remove it. However, on this years reissue they replace the version thats been on the album for years with the version that includes "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You". Unfortunately, for whatever reason, they decided to leave it out of the vinyl reissue.

So I've been slacking on updating this for the last few days. I've been working a ton, and just picked up a new nintendo wii with Donkey Kong Country Returns, so I've been busy. Donkey Kong Country Returns is really rad though, same classic game play as the original Donkey Kong Country games, yet it doesn't feel dated at all, super fun game.

Anyways, I've been listening to this bootleg (and Spiritualized, in general) a lot lately. It's by no means an exact live reproduction of the original album, but I think it's way more intense. The band playing this is huge, and sounds huge. There's a full strings section, full horns section, and full gospel choir. One of the things I really really love about this bootleg is how they seamlessly throw more traditional gospel parts into the songs, like the "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You" part in "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space". One of the most beautiful pieces of modern music I've ever heard.

Track list:

01 Ladies + Gentlemen
02 Come Together
03 I Think I'm In Love
04 All Of My Thoughs
05 Stay with Me
06 Electricity
07 Home Of The Brave / Individual
08 Broken Heart
09 No God Only Religion
10 Cool Waves
11 Cop Shoot Cop
12 encore break
13 Out Of Sight
14 Oh Happy Day

Spiritualized - iTunes Live: London Sessions (2008)

Kind of odd to pick this as my first music contribution to this blog, but I've been listening to this live ep and pretty much everything else by Spiritualized a lot lately. This ep contains acoustic live renditions of tracks from Amazing Grace and Songs In A&E. The version of "Lord, Let It Rain On Me" included in this ep is 1000 times stronger than the album version, and "Death Take Your Fiddle" is absolutely heart breaking. The whole ep is perfect head phone music for 7 am c-train rides downtown in the middle of winter. Someday when I'm not so hung over, I'll be able to write better write ups about these things, right now nothing really makes sense, I think I might still be drunk, fuck.

Tracklist:
1. Sitting on Fire
2. Lord Let It Rain On Me
3. True Love Will Find You In The End
4. Death Take Your Fiddle
5. Walking With Jesus.
