Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever mispressing help
Hey,
So I bought a used copy of Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever from a record store yesterday, except when I put it on, the A-side is a completely different album, however, the b-side is actually Tom Petty. Anyone have any information on this? Tried searching but couldn't find anything.

Creeper Lagoon - Take Back The Universe And Give Me Yesterday (2001)
This album is a request from my bro Dylan. This is Creeper Lagoon's second album. I think it rules a little bit, and apparently David Cross does too. Did I say that in my other Creeper Lagoon post? Probably, but I'm drunk at a family dinner right now so I don't really care.

The Flame - The Flame (1970)
The Flame are most well-known for their connection to The Beach Boys. Al Jardine saw them play at a bar one night, and thought they were so good that he brought Carl Wilson to see them the next night. Carl also liked them, so he invited them to LA to record an album for Brother Records, which Carl produced. Two of the members, Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar, also became short-term members of The Beach Boys, playing on 2 studio albums and 1 live album.
This album's pretty good, sounds kind of like the late-60's Beatles.

The Beach Boys - Sunflower (European Pressing) (1970)
This album is often critically acclaimed as The Beach Boys creative re-birth. I'm not sure if I agree with that statement entirely, as I don't really think The Beach Boys released any bad music at all before this album, if anything, their most creative period was in the years right before before this album. Though after Pet Sounds, Smile, and Smiley Smile, this album does show The Beach Boys as a fully working band again, and a return to the style of songs they were recording in the mid-60's, similar in sound and feel to albums like "Today!" and "Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!!)".
This is ripped from a European pressing of the vinyl, which includes a recording of "Cottonfields", alternate to the version found on "20/20".

Taylor Swift covers "God Only Knows".
Like it or love it (I personally like it, besides all the screaming fans), it's cool to see someone sharing this music with a younger audience. The sing-a-long part at the end rules. Also, she has "Don't worry baby, everything will be alright" written down her arm.

Annette - Muscle Beach Party (1964)
This album was the soundtrack to Annette Funicello's 1964 movie Muscle Beach Party. It's pretty much by the books surf-girl-pop. Brian Wilson get's a recording credit on 3 tracks on this album, and Gary Usher gets writing credits on almost all of the album. Rumors are that Brian Wilson produced this album, as well as providing backing vocals with The Honeys, however I can't really find any proof of that on the internet.
Here's what Beach Boys historian Andrew G. Doe has to say about it: "Depending on who you listen to, and when, the two Wilson/Usher cuts are either self-recording with no BW involvement or the original soundtrack recordings, co-produced by Brian and with him helping out on the bvs. if I had to come down one side or the other, I'd have to say "re-recordings"."
I think it's a pretty fun album, has a definite early 60's Brian Wilson/Phil Spector feel to it. Though keep in mind it's the soundtrack to a Disney album so all the songs are very, very tame, but still nothing like you'd expect from a teens album now-a-days. This is taken from a mono pressing.

The Bee Gees - 1st (1967)
It seems like quite a few pretty/really good psych bands/musicians/producers from the 1960's eventually ended up making disco. As you all know, Curt Boettcher was huge into disco in the decade following his genius sunshine pop productions, The Beach Boys dabbled in disco on LA Light Album (with the help of Curt Boettcher, or uhh... Becher), if you look back a few posts on this blog, you'll see The Flower Pot Men, who were a great sunshine pop band in the 1960's, and eventually partially became First Class, who still kept their sunshine pop sound but implemented tons of disco sounds into their music, and these examples just barely scratch the surface. What you might not know though, is that some of the hugest disco acts of the 1970's, also started as psych bands in the 1960's. The Bee Gees are the perfect example of one of those bands.
Sounds similar to The Hollies, The Tremeloes, and Revolver-era Beatles. Though it sounds like a lot of other psych-pop albums, it's still a good album, and it's interesting to hear pre-disco-love-ballad The Bee Gees.

The Crazy People - Bedlam (1968)
The Crazy People is very similar to the Victims Of Chance LP. Not much is known about this album. It was recorded in Burnaby, British Columbia in 1968 and released on the small Condor Records label. The main theory behind this album is that it was produced and written by Johnny Kitchen and recorded by Canadian studio musicians, though the sleeve says it was produced by "Jean Daniel Productions and Jack Millman - Music Industried". Again, one theory is that Johnny Kitchen may have been Tandyn Almer, though it's unknown for sure. Just like The Victims Of Chance, this record is a hodge-podge of weirdness and psychedelic sound collages. If you listen closely, in one of the songs they mention The Victims Of Chance in the lyrics.

The Victims Of Chance - The Victims Of Chance (1968)
Update: A user by the name of Robert Plante posted a comment on this saying Johnny Kitchen is Jack Millman, a jazz musician. A little bit of research proves this to be true, more info on Jack Millman can be found here. However, Barnaby Bennett of Tetraktys fame says that some of the tracks on this, as well as The Crazy People album, are indeed Tandyn Almer songs.
The Victims Of Chance were an American psychedelic band, and a project of the pseudonymous Johnny Kitchen, who also produced The Crazy People, Blues Train, and Larry "Wild Man" Fischer. Not much is known about this album, or Johnny Kitchen, though there's rumors that Johnny Kitchen is a pseudonym for fabled LA producer/songwriter/friend of Brian Wilson, Tandyn Almer.
This album features all types of tripped out shit. Think funky sunshine pop, full of weird samples, weird spoken word, tripped out guitar noises, snippets of cartoons, and more. This album sounds very similar to the other Johnny Kitchen production, The Crazy People - Bedlam. It also syncs up perfectly with the Easter Island episode of theJacques Cousteau Odyssey if you time it just right.
This album is certified for only the heaviest of trippers. Be careful with this one, it's a real heavy hitter.

Originally recorded between 1967 and 1969, this was intended to be the debut solo album for Sandy Salisbury, who is known for his work with The Millennium, Sagittarius, The Ballroom, and Tommy Roe. Intended for release on Gary Usher's ill-fated Together Records, it was unfortunately never released until 2001, after reissues of The Millennium's Begin, and Sagittarius' Present Tense were critically acclaimed. This reissue was released in 2011 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the album's release.

No World Order was Todd Rungren's attempt at a interactive album made up of 4 hours of musical fragments 4 to 8 seconds long that could be combined and altered in an infinite amount of ways allowing users to create their own custom musical experience. The First Class - The First Class (1974)
The First Class is John Carter's studio project after The Flower Pot Men. The studio band was made up of John Carter, Tony Burrows, and Chas Mills. John Carter wrote all the songs with his wife Gillian Shakespeare. The First Class are best remembered for their smash hit "Beach Baby", which mimics the production styles and sound of The Beach Boys.
John Carter, Tony Burrows, and Chas Mills had no interest in touring, so they hired a group of 5 musicians to perform the song live. The 5 musicians, as well as John, Tony, and Chas are pictured on the front cover of the album, though the 5 musicians that performed the song live took no part in recording the album.

I just spent the last 2 hours adding the years of release to the titles of every post on this blog. Let me know if you find any mistakes.
The Left Banke - Walk Away Renee (1967)
While bands like The Byrds, and The Beatles were experimenting with different ways to use string instruments, The Left Banke incorporated a harpsichord, small strings section, and woodwinds section, giving them their signature, and much copied, Baroque-n-roll sound. This sound mixed with vocal harmonies similar to The Beatles or The Zombies, earned them two hits early in their career with "Walk Away Renee" and "Pretty Ballerina". Michael Brown, who played keyboards for the band, and wrote most of the songs on this album was only 17 years old at the time of it's release. His father, Henry Lookofsky, produced and arranged the album.

Small Faces - 78 In the Shade (1978)
A while back someone requested that I upload The Small Faces 1970's comeback albums. At the time I only owned a copy of Playmates so I uploaded that. But I recently found this in a discount bin at a local record store. I feel exactly the same way about this as I do about Playmates. Not a bad listen, but no where near as good as the 1960's Small Faces recordings.

Mississippi John Hurt - The Immortal Mississippi John Hurt (1967)
John Smith Hurt (1892 - 1966), better known as Mississippi John Hurt was an influential country-blues guitar player and singer. Raised in Avalon, Mississippi, John taught himself how to play guitar at the age of nine. His first recording sessions were in 1928 for Okeh Records, but after these were a commercial failure, he continues his work as a farmer. After a couple of his early recordings were released on Harry Smith's Anthology Of Folk Music, there was a interest in his music in the folk revival scene. When an Australian man found a recording of "Avalon Blues" there became an increased interest in finding Mississippi John Hurt himself. in 1963, folk musicologist Tom Hoskins, was able to locate Mississippi John Hurt in Avalon, Mississippi, using the lyrics to "Avalon Blues". While in Avalon, Tom Hoskins encouraged Mississippi John Hurt to move to Washinton D.C. and continue to perform. During the final years of his life, Mississippi John Hurt performed extensively, including a performance at 1964's Newport Folk Festival and recorded three albums for Vanguard records.
One of the rediscovered Mississippi John Hurt's 1960's albums, and one of the best country-blues albums ever recorded. One of the most honestly gentle recordings I've ever heard.

The Flower Pot Men - Let's Go To San Francisco (1967/1988)
The Flower Pot Men were a California-obsessed British sunshine-psych group from the Late 60's. The band was a studio group created by ex-members John Carter and Ken Lewis, of The Ivy League and Carter-Lewis & The Southerners. The Ivy League were known for recording vocal harmonies for The Who's early records, as well as recording the first version "My World Fell Down", which later became a famous non-hit for Sagittarius. After The Flower Pot Men, John Carter wrote the smash hit "Beach Baby" for First Class.
The Flower Pot Men was a studio project for John Carter, and Keith Lewis, who got a minor hit at the tail end of the Summer Of Love with "Let's Go To San Francisco", and had released 4 more singles, one under the moniker Friends. Though none of those singles were hits, and the group dissolved in 1970. Over all, the band recorded a couple LP's worth of tunes, this album compiles the highlights of their recordings. I would highly recommend this album to fans of the late 1960's Beach Boys, and The Byrds.

P.F. Sloan - Twelve More Times (1966)
Hey guys, after a nearly 2 month hiatus, I'm finally back, and I sprained my ankle so I got a week off work, which means I should be able to get quite a few more albums up here to make up for the 2 month break.
I've uploaded a couple P.F. Sloan 45's here before, but in case you don't know, P.F. Sloan is most known for writing hits such as "Eve Of Destruction" for Barry McGuire, "Let Me Be" for The Turtles (which is on this album), "Secret Agent Man", and quite a few others. Jimmy Webb wrote a song called "P.F. Sloan", which became a minor hit for The Association. And, Brian Wilson's controversial therapist, Eugene Landy, had claimed to be P.F. Sloan in interviews. He also helped arrange "Vibrations In C" with Calgary folk-pop maestro Barnaby Bennett, for release on The Tetraktys' classic Die Brucke. There's also rumors that around the same time he was working with folk-pop maestro Barnaby Bennett, he was attending private song-writing sessions with the much fabled Friar Chris. It's all pieces of the puzzle.
This is P.F. Sloan's second solo album. Originally released in 1966, it has more of a full LA folk-pop sound than his previous work. In my opinion, this album is P.F. Sloan's best solo album, and has his best songs. "The Man Behind The Red Balloon" is one of my all-time favorites, and the version of "Here's Where You Belong" is much better than the version on The Grassroots - Feelings. "Halloween Mary" is a real heavy-hitter, and it can also be found on the fairly-recent Where The Action Is: LA Nuggets collection. Though you could complain that this album is almost a little too Bob Dylan influenced, the songs are still all great in their own merits, and I highly recommend it to fans of 1960's LA, folk-pop, and of course, Bob Dylan.
Certified For Trippers.

Low - Things We Lost In The Fire (2001)
Don't get too excited guys, I'm not fully back yet. I'm posting this from my desk on my lunch break at work. Still need to get internet hooked up at work, but hopefully I'll have that done in the next week or two, got some real mellow trips ripped pretty recently that I wanna put up.
Low's a band that I've never been really able to get too too into, I've been able to get into a few tracks but get bored pretty quick. But this morning as I was riding the train to work, I had my ipod on shuffle, the song "Laser Beam" off this album came on and it got me, so I listened to the rest of the album on the way to work. Super mellow music, perfect for early morning train/bus rides through downtown on rainy days like today. I can definitely say I wanna check out more from these guys after finally "getting" this, this morning. I think if you're a fan of Kid Dakota, you'd probably like this as well.

Their first album was produced by Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, who said he thought her songs sounded like Jimmy Webb, however this album is produced by her husband, Nathan Larson. The basic theme of this album, as the title suggests, is colonialism. I've never heard the first album, that Mark Linkous produced, but listening to this really makes me want to. It's a pretty damn good collection of countrified indie pop.

Angela Faye Martin - Pictures From Home (2009)
I can't really find too much about this album online. From what I can find, it seems like Angela Faye Martin was from the same town as Mark Linkous, yeah, that guy I'm obsessed with who played in that Sparklehorse band. Anyways, I guess they lived close to each other and were friends, and Mark Linkous wanted to produce some of Angela's music, so he produced this album. It's somewhat similar to Sparklehorse, you can definitely hear Mark's production, and I think it's really great.

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk (1979)
After Fleetwood Mac was boosted to super-stardom with Rumours, they were given a blank cheque for their follow-up album. Lindsey Buckingham took the reins on this album, writing more than half the songs, producing the album, and even recording parts of it at home, creating an ethereal sound, with a punk and new wave influence, nothing like Rumours. At the time of it's release, the album bombed compared to Rumours, and was never able to produce any major hits for the band, mostly due to the entirely different direction the band had taken. This album is an absolute masterpiece of pop-art.

Klaatu - Klaatu (1976)
When this album was first released in 1976, there was a massive rumor that these guys were actually The Beatles, however by the end of the year it was revealed that they were really just a Canadian progressive rock band. RIP Macho Man
Today is a very sad day. The great Macho Man Randy Savage has left this world due to a car accident. He will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Macho Man, you've inspired me to be a man, and there's no way I could have ever paid this back to you. I owe you a tremendous debt, and I promise that for the rest of my life, I will be a man. I love you Randy, and my life will never be the same now that you're gone.

Salt Chunk Mary - Demos 1992-93
After the Dancing Hoods post, here's a little bit more Sparklehorse history. After Dancing Hoods broke up, Mark Linkous moved back to Virginia and joined the band The Johnson Family with his brother Matt, as well as former members of the band Honor Role, Steve Schick and Chip Jones. The band eventually changed their name to Salt Chunk Mary, and in their short life span released 9 demo songs, one of which is an early version of "Someday I Will Treat You Good" which was Mark Linkous' first hit as Sparklehorse, and was also included on the movie Laurel Canyon starring Christian Bale (which Mark also makes a cameo appearance in).
Thanks to chromewaves these demo recordings have become available online, though while you have to download each file individually from him, I put them into a .rar file to make things a little easier, but I definitely recommend checking out his blog, because without him, this post wouldn't be possible.

Dancing Hoods - Hallelujah Anyway (1988)
Before Mark Linkous started making solo music under the Sparklehorse moniker, he was the front man of New York City power-pop band Dancing Hoods. Dancing Hoods are comparable to The Replacements, though less-edgy. With this album, Dancing Hoods were making an obvious grab at success after the rave reviews of their debut album, and they came close as "Baby's Got Rockets" was a minor hit on college radio. However, after the release of this album, the band moved from New York to Los Angeles to attempt to get the attention of a major label, but they never did, and broke up because of it, and thank god for that. This isn't a terrible album, it's actually quite enjoyable, though doesn't come close to the beauty Linkous put on record as Sparklehorse.

Pet Sounds 45th anniversary!
Though I'm sure I wasn't even the slightest thought of my parents imaginations at the time of Pet Sounds release, 45 years ago yesterday, the album means more to me than any other piece of music ever has.
And it seems like just yesterday I was running away to New York to see the Pet Sounds 40th Anniversary Shows at the Beacon Theater all by myself. Really it was just 5 years ago, and I had just turned 18! The trip turned out to be a life-changing experience for me, and I really can't thank The Beach Boys, and more specifically, Brian Wilson, enough for it.
Before the first of the 2 Pet Sounds concerts at the Beacon Theater, I decided to show up early to try to get a chance to meet Brian Wilson, who at the time was my idol, and I had worked ridiculous hours at a restaurant for really low wages for months to save up enough to go on this trip. I was also going through a terrible break up at the time, drinking a little bit too much, and getting increasingly anti-social. So this trip was a pretty big deal for me. Anyways, outside the concert, started talking to a couple guys who were also waiting for the chance to meet Brian. One guy was from England, also travelling by himself, the other guy lived a block or two away from the venue and was an advertising director for Hewlett Packard. They both ended up being at both concerts, and we ended up going for beers after both. While we were waiting outside Brian's bus on the first night, here's what happened:
Pretty cool stuff. Unfortunately I don't have any more pictures from either the concerts, or the trip, because I had them stored on an online account, and an ex-girlfriend deleted it a couple years back.

Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994)
As of this last week, it's finally been nice in Calgary (no more snow!!). This is an album I always seem to rock pretty hard in the early months of summer (or late months of spring). There's something about this album that makes me want to sit in a boiling hot car while drinking a slurpee and driving through the country or something. There's some pretty classic jams on this album. "Gold Soundz" is one of my all time favorites.

Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue (1977)
Pacific Ocean Blue is by far the best solo album released by any member of The Beach Boys (though I'm not comparing it to anything Mike Love has done outside of The Beach Boys, because that stuff's in a league of its own). Dennis himself wasn't a fan of this album, claiming he thought it lacked substance, and was more excited for the release of it's follow-up "Bambu", which ended up being un-finished and un-released at the time of his death. This is a great album of 70's rock that The Beach Boys would have been incapable of releasing as a band. Every bit as essential as Fleetwood Mac's Tusk.
This album was re-issued a few years back as a 3xLP, which included a re-mastered version of the album, a LP of outtakes, and a LP with the "Bambu" sessions. You can purchase it from http://www.sundazed.com/ as well as tons of other great and hard to find vinyl re-issues. I unfortunately just have a stupid white label promo of the original pressing, so no bonus tracks for you guys.

The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground (1969)
I think this is my favorite album by The Velvet Underground. It's The Velvet's first album without John Cale, and first with Doug Yule. It's also a lot softer than the 2 albums they released before it, and feels slightly more moving, and personal. The first time I heard this album was with my friend Dav3d in 2007, I had been big into The Velvet Underground & Nico and decided to explore the rest of their albums, beginning with picking up a cheap re-issue of this one. Before putting it on, we smoked a bit of pot and to this day I don't think any album has blown me away as much as this one did when I was stoned, especially "The Murder Mystery". I'm not saying you need pot to enjoy this album, as I've listened to it hundreds of times since then while I was sober and loved it just as much. It became a regular album that I'd put on while closing down the kitchen at the pub I worked at at the time, also a great listen for the morning after a night of partying, or during late night car rides (and I mean so late that the whole world seems silent). Great album.
Oh, I also heard a rumor today that Lou Reed's gonna be doing some sort of performance for next years High Performance Rodeo in Calgary.

Leadbelly & Woody Guthrie - Folkways: The Original Vision (1988)
In 1988, Folkways records released the grammy winning tribute album to Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly titled "Folkways: A Vision Shared", which featured covers of Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly recorded by popular artists such as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Brian Wilson, and more. Along with that release, they also released this album, which contains the original recordings by Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly. However, one song that was on the tribute album is absent from this album due to the fact that there's no known recording of it, but instead they've added 6 bonus tracks that aren't on the tribute album.

At the request of the mystical wizard A-ron, here's Spiritualized's 1997 magnum-opus. Nazz - Nazz III (1970)
I guess the story of this album is that they actually started recording it after the first Nazz album, however the sessions, which at the time were known as the "Fungo Bat Sessions", were scrapped, and Nazz Nazz was released instead. By the time they finally released this album, Todd Rundgren had left the group to pursue his solo career, and since the rest of the band didn't take too kindly to that, they erased all the vocals he had recorded, and lead-singer Robert Antoni re-recorded all of them himself. Though, Rundgren still appears on both the front, and back of the album art. Since most of the songs on this album are penned by Rundgren, it showcases the beginnings of the signature pop-style on his first few solo albums.

The Lemon Pipers - Green Tambourine (1967)
Cincinnati bubblegum pop. What separates these guys from most bubblegum bands is that they actually wrote their own songs and have a slightly harder edge (there's a bit of fuzz! and some cool almost Boettcher-ish production techniques), and they're really great! I don't know too much about these guys, and I just picked this album up today and I'm listening to it now for the first time, but I think if you're into bubblegum, you'll be pleasantly surprised with this.

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - Make It Happen (1967)
One of Smokey's underrated albums of the 60's, which is surprising because a few songs on this turned out to be some of his greatest hits. Classic motown soul. I don't need to say much about this because everyone knows Smokey, and if they don't, they should.

The Box Tops - Dimensions (1969)
The Box Tops final album. If you don't know who The Box Tops were, they're most famous for their hit songs "The Letter" and "Cry Like A Baby" (neither of those are on this album, though there's a great reimagining of "The Letter" on Mike And Dean Reimagine Rock N Roll City ). The Box Tops are also now well known for being Alex Chilton of Big Star fame's first band.
This album was the final album by The Box Tops, and their first without songwriter/producer David Penn. Alex Chilton has 3 original compositions on this album and for the most part the rest are covers. A great collection of the soul-pop that's come to be expected by The Box Tops, and a fitting end to a short, but great career.

The Sugar Shoppe - The Sugar Shoppe (1968)
Psych-pop from Toronto, Ontario. One of the members went on to star in the Hollywood blockbuster 'Titanic'. Hal Blaine of The Wrecking Crew fame plays drums on this, and it's produced by Al De Lory, who also produced Glen Campbell.
Over all this album's enjoyable but nothing special, except for The Candy Children Song, it's a classic jam. There's some weird jokes about tripping and skipping through out it.
Similar to The Free Design.

1. Skip-A-Long Sam

The Three O'Clock - Baroque Hoedown (1982)
This 1982 EP was The Three O'Clock's debut release, and also one of the early beginnings of the "paisley underground" movement in L.A. in the 1980's. (The Three O'Clock's bassist actually coined the term "paisley underground", originally as a joke). This album is produced by Earle Mankey, who's also engineered The Beach Boys "Love You", and "M.I.U. Album" albums, as well as produced bands such as The Runaways, and Concrete Blonde. This album is a damn near perfect mix of 1980's power-pop and 1960's psych-pop.
Tracklist:
1. With A Cantaloupe Girlfriend
2. I Go Wild
3. Marjorie Tells Me
4. Feel A Whole Lot Better
5. Sorry
6. In Love In Too
7. Lucifer Sam
8. As Real As Real

Want me to love you?
If anyone can track down video's or mp3's of Sparklehorse covering Maggie May by Rod Stewart, and Smothered In Hugs by Guided By Voices, I'll love you forever.

The Beach Boys - The Beach Boys (1985)
I've been going through a big 1970's/1980's Beach Boys phase lately. Most of the 1970's stuff is really great but the 1980's stuff is generally pretty cheesy. This album, released in 1985, was their first album in 5 years and an attempt to regain past glories. While it's not an extraordinary listen, or really anything special at all, there are a few enjoyable moments through out the album. I'm a big fan of the Mike Love and Terry Melcher pennedopening single "Getcha Back", which has a similar feel to "Do It Again". It's a real heavy hitter.
Tracklist:
1. Getcha Back
2. It's Gettin' Late
3. Crack At Your Love
4. Maybe I Don't Know
5. She Believes In Love Again
6. California Calling
7. Passing Friend
8. I'm So Lonely
9. Where I Belong
10. I Do LoveYou
11. It's Just A Matter Of Time
